I found the concept of
conflict management to be very interesting and useful. With every group there
will be conflict. Learning how to manage it and minimize it as much as possible
are important to group success. The book discusses how Native American and
Mexican cultures raise children in a tradition that emphasizes harmony with nature
and the importance of the group over the individual. How it is better in a noncompetitive
and cooperative environment. Therefore, sharing of answers on a quiz could be a
sign of solidarity and generosity. However, in North American culture, where
individual success is valued, sharing is seen as cheating. These cultures are
diverse and can conflict when in a shared environment. This can create barriers
if the differences are not recognized and accepted. Proper communication and
awareness can minimize the conflict. As Harris (pg. 83) writes, whether conflict
has a positive effect depends in large measure on how it is handled.
